If you’re in the UK and you’ve not voted yet, go now. Put a lil’ X in a box. Offer yourself an incentive if necessary, if not having had a say in who runs your world doesn’t encourage you, try cake.
Took the midget along and luckily (or perhaps unluckily) the place was fairly empty. He might as well get to see the duller bits of democracy in action; before he sets up his evil baby world domination programme, and makes us all his unwilling slaves.
Locally voted labour. I’m no big fan of new labour, but the choice was only those three and local libdems appear to be using Al Capone as inspiration.
The labour bloke is one of those always wanted to be a politician types, which I’m somewhat uncomfortable with. He’s 26 and this is the second time he’s stood-first time in this ward-has a degree in politics and quite clearly has some lofty ambitions. In general I’d prefer people who become involved in politics in an incidental way, not those who’ve grown up wanting to be in charge. However, it was him or the conservative candidate. And at least his group have done local campaign stuff I didn’t know the conservative person even existed until I got my slip.
I should mention that at local level last year, we had six people to vote for and only one libdem candidate. So in amongst the one lib and four labour people I voted for the first time ever for a tory. I don’t like majority control councils. Whilst at national level hung/coalition doesn’t always bode well (with notable exceptions) at council level majority control seems to give them (of whatever party) the excuse to behave like power crazed idiots.
Europe. Went green. Though the Jury Team chap sounded nice I don’t think he has a cat in hells chance of getting in, plus at 19 he should be being selfish not sitting in Strasbourg with people twice his age discussing agriculture subsidies. Though I think it very laudable that he’s clearly a caring and responsibly thinking young man I think he can wait a few years. Stop being so responsible at 19, seriously. This is one of the few times when you can do what you want with no spousal/familial/job responsibilities.
Vote.

I looked at Jury Team, and found that they favour “direct democracy” – single issue mass voting by mobile phone. This to me is vapid idealism – I have no doubt that in our media environment such a thing would quickly lead to “tyranny of the majority”.
